Respecting Diversity in Our Hair Policy
At Sound Movement Arts Center, we celebrate diversity and strive to create an environment where everyone feels at home. We understand that hair is a personal and cultural expression, and we aim to respect this diversity while upholding safety and professionalism in classes and performances.
Hair should be securely fastened and away from the face during classes and performances, ensuring safety and full engagement of dancers’ vision and movements.
We welcome various hairstyles, including buns, braids, ponytails, and hair wraps, as long as they allow for effective participation in all dance forms. Hair must be in a bun for Ballet and Low tight ponytail for Acro. All other styles should have one of the following options: ponytail, french braids or bun and for short hair at least half up/half down and/or securely bobby pinned behind ears.
*Typically, a Low Bun/Ponytail is required for Recital (ages 4+). Some Ballet classes, including Twinkle Tots classes may do a standard Ballet Bun (at crown of head). **Subject to change year to year.
For Boys: hair must be cleanly out of the face.
We are open to feedback and suggestions for improving our guidelines to be as inclusive and respectful as possible.

DRESS CODE:
ACRO
Girls: Leotard, Unitard or Sports Bra under tank top/t-shirt with shorts.
Boys: Form fitting t-shirt/tank top and athletic shorts.
ALL: Bare Feet
BALLET
Girls: Ballet Leotard (any color/style) and pink tights; skirts are optional. Students must also have a Black Leotard that can be worn for events, select classes, etc. Pink Ballet Shoes (leather or canvas split sole). Hair must be worn in a clean tight bun.
Boys: Form fitting t-shirt/tank top and black athletic shorts or leggings. Black Ballet Shoes.
CONTEMPORARY, MODERN AND JAZZ
Girls: Leotard and convertable tights, unitard, tight-fitting jazz pants/leggings or shorts and sports bra tops/tank top/t-shirt only. *A Sports Bra or Leotard must be worn under loose fitting t-shirts.
Boys: Form fitting t-shirt/tank top and athletic (basketball) shorts or joggers.
Shoes for Contemporary: Pirouette Shoes only.
Modern: Bare Feet only.
Shoes for Jazz: Black or Tan Jazz Shoes only.
HIP HOP
Girls: Athletic clothing. Leggings, Shorts or Sweat Pants with a fitted T-shirt or Tank Top (sports bra must be worn under).
Boys: Athletic clothing. Form fitting T-shirt or Tank Top and athletic shorts or sweatpants.
ALL: Clean Hip Hop Dance sneakers must be worn. These must be for Dance Only and not worn outside the studio. *No jeans.
TAP
Girls: Athletic clothing. Leggings, Shorts or Sweat Pants with a fitted T-shirt or Tank Top (sports bra must be worn under).
Boys: Athletic clothing. Form fitting T-shirt or Tank Top and athletic shorts or sweatpants.
ALL: Clean Tap Shoes must be worn.
*No jeans.
TWINKLE TOTS (ages 2-3)
Girls: Leotard (any color or style) with or without attached skirt and pink tights. Pink Ballet slippers (leather or canvas). Hair must be worn in a clean tight bun. *If hair is too short for a bun, please pull back off face into half ponytail or clipped back with bobby pins.
Boys: Form fitting t-shirt/tank top and black athletic shorts or leggings. Black Ballet slippers (leather or canvas).
