FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of our most common questions that we are asked by visitors and new families. If you can’t find the answer to your specific question, contact us and we’d be happy to help!

Q: What is SMAC?

A: SMAC stands for Sound Movement Arts Center. We are Tacoma’s first (and only) Dance, Cheer and Modeling school. We offer classes unlike any other in the area.

Q: Where are you located?

A: SMAC is located inside of Urban Grace: The Downtown Church – 902 Market Street, Tacoma.

Q: Are you affiliated with the Church?

A: No, though we are friendly.

Q: Where do I enter for classes?

A: You will enter Urban Grace on the 9th Street side. There is a door about halfway up the street that says “prayer” above it and there will be a SMAC sandwich board at the entrance. Our Studio’s are located on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator.

Q: Where do I park for classes?

A: Since we are located in a downtown Church, we recommend using the loading/unloading zone on S. 9th to drop off your kids and then drive around the block to find parking. There is a lot of parking behind the church on Court D and a parking lot across the street on S. 9th. Please be aware of the metered parking or time limits. We are not responsible if you receive a ticket.

Q: How old does my child have to be to take lessons at SMAC?

A: We offer classes for students ages 2 and up!

Q: What types of classes do you offer?

A: Currently, we have three categories of classes: Dance, Cheer and Modeling.

Q: Why are your classes listed as 25 or 55 minutes long, instead of 30 minutes or an hour?

A: Our classes are structured like a regular 30 minute or hour long class, but will end 5 minutes early to minimize congestion in the hallways outside the Dance Studio and Room 308. This small amount of time also allows our staff to monitor the common areas for the safety of our population and gives students/staff with multiple classes a short break in which to change rooms/shoes, etc.

Q: How many “sessions” do you have per year? Are there separate Fall and Spring schedules?

A: Our studio year runs from September to June, culminating with our annual recital. Our ten-month schedule gives our instructors the opportunity to know their students well. This in turn allows them to tailor their class format to meet the unique needs of each dancer.

Q: How much does it cost to enroll in classes at SMAC?

A: That depends on how many classes per week you/your child enrolls in. Tuition for one class per week (4 classes per month) is $48. Each class thereafter is incrementally discounted between 10-40% per class. We offer new students one week of Unlimited Classes for only $15 and have a 20% sibling discount, per child. You will find our rates competitively priced with that of other local studios.

Q: Why do we have to pay a registration fee to sign up for classes?

A: The annual registration fee helps us cover additional fee’s associated with running a business, which occur before our classes begin in the Fall. You will find our registration rate lower or comparable to most.

Q: When is tuition due?

A: Tuition is due the 1st of each month and late on the 10th. There will be a $10 late fee assessed for any payment made after the 10th of the month. More information can be found under Policy. Auto Pay is a great way to avoid late fees.

Q: Do you accept male students?

A: Yes! We welcome them into any class, at any age and encourage them to attend classes from both our male and female faculty members in all styles.

Q: My daughter is 12 years old and this will be her first year in dance class. Will she be in a “beginner” class with much younger students?

A: No, she will be enrolled in a class with students her own age group. Most of our classes have both new and current students; more than likely, she will meet another student in her class who is also a beginner.

Q: Are friends/family allowed to observe classes?

A: Unfortunately, no. We find that students lose focus when visitors are in the studios. However, we do have a lobby area in which family may wait. On occasion, visitors may be invited into the studios to view a portion of the class. This is only allowed with the teacher’s permission.

Q: What does my child have to wear for class?

A: Proper attire is required in order to participate in class. This is to ensure the highest level of safety and training possible. Please see our Dress Code for more information.

Q: Where can I purchase Dance/Cheer Clothing and Shoes?

A: There are many places around town. We suggest: Discount Dance (online): www.discountdance.com and The Dance Collection (Tacoma & Federal Way): www.dancecollection.net

Q: How many instructors does SMAC have?

A: Please see our Faculty Page for more information.

Q: Will there be classes on snow/severe weather days?

A: In the event of severe weather conditions during the winter months, we recommend checking our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/Smactac to be sure we are still having class. Often times the roads may be bad in the morning, but cleared by the afternoon so classes will remain as scheduled – for morning classes check by 9:00 am, for afternoon classes please check after 1:00 pm.

Q: Does SMAC have an annual recital?

A: Yes! It will be held in June. Dates TBD. More information will be posted on our website as we get closer.

Q: How do I enroll my child at SMAC?

A: Registration is going on now. Enroll online at www.smactac.com. If you have any questions pertaining to enrollment, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
